Coffee Grinders: Choose by Brewing Method
Start with the Baratza Encore for filter-only coffee; consider the Encore ESP if espresso is part of your routine. The difference that matters is espresso adjustment, not the similar model names.
A grinder should match the coffee you actually make. A French press household and a Bambino owner need different control over grind size. Our two-product shortlist starts with that distinction; it does not claim to cover every electric or manual grinder. If you already own a grinder, identify the problem before replacing it: awkward adjustment, inconvenient dosing or a brewing method it was not designed around.
Which coffee grinders should you consider?
These are starting recommendations by use case, not a ranking of the entire market. Check the reason and the reason to skip before choosing.
Espresso, or espresso plus filter
Baratza Encore ESP
Why consider it: Its dedicated espresso adjustment range is the reason to choose it for espresso or a mix of espresso and filter brewing. The included dosing cup helps transfer grounds to a portafilter.
The tradeoff: You still need to weigh doses and dial in your coffee; the grinder does not automatically choose a recipe.
Skip this if you only brew filter coffee and have no reason to pay for espresso adjustment.

Baratza Encore
Why consider it: For filter-only brewing, we would start with the Encore rather than paying specifically for the ESP’s espresso-focused adjustment range.
The tradeoff: If espresso is part of your plans, compare the Encore ESP instead. The two model names are not interchangeable.
Skip this if espresso is a regular part of your routine.

Espresso needs fine adjustment, not just a fine setting
The Encore ESP manual divides its adjustment into an espresso range, settings 1–20, and a filter range, 21–40. The smaller changes in the espresso range are its practical distinction. For a buyer, the question is whether you need to fine-tune espresso shots, not simply whether a grinder can produce small particles. These numbers are starting points, not a universal recipe for every bean.
Choose a workflow you will repeat every morning
Decide whether you want to weigh beans for each cup or keep beans in the hopper and measure the output. Think through where the grounds go: a filter basket, a catch bin or a portafilter. A dosing cup is useful only if it makes that transfer easier. Leave room for a scale and a place to brush away spilled grounds.
Do not let burr labels replace the buying decision
Burr shape and material alone do not tell you whether a grinder fits your routine. For this shortlist, adjustment range and handling are more actionable. We have not measured particle distribution, retention or noise, so we do not rank these models on those grounds. If quiet operation is essential, seek model-specific noise evidence before buying.
Before you buy
- Write down every brewing method you use, including any espresso machine you already own.
- Compare the exact Encore or Encore ESP model, included cup or bin, and warranty terms.
- Budget for a scale if you do not own one; check access for cleaning and replacement parts.
- Check today’s delivered price for the selected model instead of treating a sale badge as evidence of value.

Questions about coffee grinders
Is the Encore ESP worth considering for filter coffee only?
For filter-only use, our starting point is the Encore. The ESP becomes more relevant when you also make espresso or have a definite plan to do so. Do not pay for a hypothetical upgrade without comparing the actual price difference.
Can one grinder handle espresso and pour-over?
The Encore ESP supports both ranges. The practical compromise is switching settings and returning to your espresso recipe, so keep a note of the settings and dose that work for each coffee. It does not dial in the shot automatically.
Should I replace my grinder before my espresso machine?
First identify the limitation. If the grinder cannot make useful small adjustments for espresso, that is a reason to investigate it before buying a different machine. A cleaning or technique issue calls for a different solution; this shortlist cannot diagnose a faulty setup.
