For a small table, start with Yellow Mountain Imports' 31.1-inch rubber-backed mat if the entire square fits on the flat tabletop and you can store it rolled. Choose its fitted 34.8-inch square table cover only for a matching table when folded storage matters more than moving the surface between differently sized tables. The fitted cover is an alternative to a loose mat, not simply a larger version of the same product.
Check all four corners
Place racks across no edge
Match storage to the material
The best choice leaves four stable rack positions and does not hang loose where sleeves can catch it. A smaller mat cannot make an undersized table spacious; it can only change the surface you play on. Use our folding Mahjong table guide for the table itself. Here the decisions are backing, edge transitions, cleaning, and the shape the mat takes after game night.

When should you buy the 31.1-inch rubber-backed mat?
The Yellow Mountain Imports 31.1-inch mat (Amazon search) is the more flexible choice for rotating hosts who already have a compatible flat surface. Its rubber underside is intended to resist sliding, while the felt top separates moving tiles from the hard table beneath.
On a nominal 34-inch square table, centering a 31.1-inch mat leaves about 1.45 inches of uncovered table on each side, calculated from the stated dimensions. That margin is not a full rack zone. Decide whether the racks belong entirely on the mat or entirely off it; a rack balanced across a raised edge can behave differently when a player presses down or moves exposed tiles.
The roll-up storage is a benefit only if you have a place for the roll. A long shelf, a cupboard side, or a suitable separate sleeve can work. A small drawer may not. The manufacturer specifically says not to fold this mat for storage, so a listing photograph showing a folded package should not override its care instructions. Do not plan on squeezing it into a compact tile bag.
- Pros: moves between suitable tables; rubber backing; included roll-up carrying sleeve.
- Cons: long stored shape; a raised edge to plan around; not intended for folded storage or machine washing.
Skip this if your flat tabletop is smaller than the mat, or the only storage space available requires sharply folding it.

When is a fitted cover better than a loose mat?
The Yellow Mountain Imports fitted square cover (Amazon search) suits a regular host using one matching card table. Its apron goes over the table edges, so the design relies on table fit rather than the rubber-backed construction of the smaller loose mat.
That can produce a more continuous covered area for racks and tiles, but only when the cover fits the top correctly. Too large, and loose fabric can move under equipment. Too small, and the cover may not sit flat or pull down as intended. Measure the table's width, length, corner shape, and top thickness. A nominal “34-inch card table” description does not establish every one of those dimensions.
The maker describes folded storage for this cover and permits low-temperature ironing. Do not apply that advice to the rubber-backed mat. Sizing needs a separate check: the manufacturer's title says 34.8 inches square and specifies a 34.3-inch-square table, but one sentence mislabels the units. The Amazon blue-cover listing also mixes 34 × 34.8, 34 × 34, and 34.8 × 34.8-inch descriptions. These are conflicting descriptions, not three independently verified fits. Ask the seller to confirm the current YM-TR001-B87 cover's finished top dimensions and your table's fit before ordering; do not silently substitute the green variant.
- Pros: fitted edge treatment; folds for storage; useful for a dedicated compatible table.
- Cons: table-specific fit; no reason to assume the same grip as the rubber-backed mat; manufacturer sizing text warrants confirmation for borderline fits.
Skip this if you regularly move among round, rectangular, and differently sized square tables, or want a mat that simply rolls out wherever there is room.

How do you check a square mat on a round table?
Check the corners, not just the width across the center. A square can fit across a round table's diameter yet have unsupported corners. For a square mat to lie fully inside a circular top, the table diameter must be at least the mat's diagonal, before adding a practical margin.
A 31.1-inch square has a diagonal of about 44 inches by calculation. That means a 36-inch round table cannot fully support that square merely because 31.1 is less than 36. This is geometry, not a manufacturer recommendation for a particular table. Rounded mat corners may alter the exact edge shape, but do not assume they remove enough material to solve a large mismatch.
For an oval or rounded-square table, make a paper outline and check the entire perimeter. Do not trim a backed mat unless its maker explicitly permits it; cutting can change the edge finish and expose layers. If the surface is too small, a correctly sized alternative is preferable to leaving a flap that catches a player's wrist.
Where should the racks, cards, and discards go?
Test the layout with all four player stations before choosing a pattern or color. Put each rack, pusher, and card holder where the player naturally uses it. Then build the walls and leave a central discard area. The mat should support the playing routine instead of forcing every item into an attractive but cramped photograph.
Busy printed guides can help some beginners but also add visual competition near small tile markings and dense annual cards. Prefer clear contrast between the equipment and the background you actually see under your room lighting. If teaching information is printed on a mat, verify that it matches the version your group plays; decorative symbols are not an official rules reference.
Keep drinks outside the active surface when possible. A cup placed beside a rack steals the very edge space you are trying to preserve, and a spill can mean cleaning both the mat and the tiles before play resumes. A separate stable side table can solve more than moving to an oversized mat that does not fit your main table.
How should you clean and store it after a game?
Remove loose debris gently, follow the maker's damp-cleaning instructions, and let the surface dry before storage. Do not assume a product called a game mat is machine washable. Backing and fabric can have different care limits, and the wrong cleaning method can create a worse playing surface than the original spot.
For the rubber-backed model, roll rather than fold, and avoid trapping heavy objects on top of the stored roll. For the fitted cover, fold according to its instructions and allow time to lay it out before a game. We have not measured flattening times or noise reduction, so neither product is ranked here by an invented decibel figure or a promise that every crease disappears immediately.
Start here: choose the 31.1-inch mat for compatible tables and roll storage, or the fitted cover for one verified table and fold storage. Skip this first: buying a mat wider than the supported surface or expecting it to fix a table that cannot hold four racks. Our Mahjong bag guide explains why the mat may need its own sleeve, and the Mahjong hub connects the rest of the setup.
