For a shallow desk against a wall, start with the VIVO STAND-V001 if you set monitor height once and can mount the pole off-center. Choose the Ergotron LX Pro if you regularly reposition the screen and can accommodate its folded arm geometry. Neither is a universal zero-clearance mount. A wall beside the arm, a shelf above it, and rear-facing monitor plugs can each prevent the position shown in a product photo.

The useful comparison is the space left for your eyes, keyboard, and hands after installation. A mount can remove a bulky monitor stand yet bring the screen closer to your face. This guide focuses on that problem; our older Ergotron LX versus Amazon Basics comparison covers a different product pairing. LX Pro specifications below must not be substituted for legacy LX specifications.

Why choose the VIVO pole arm for a fixed setup?

The VIVO STAND-V001 is a sensible first candidate when you need to recover desk surface without paying for frequent floating height adjustment. Its monitor height is set along a vertical pole. The articulated sections can be arranged sideways if your desk has enough width for that layout.

Mounting off-center is the key possibility to investigate. A pole directly behind the screen can force the arm to fold toward the wall or project forward. Placing the pole to one side lets the arm approach the screen horizontally across the rear of the desk. This is a layout strategy, not a measured guarantee: the actual result depends on the pole position, arm joints, monitor width, and VESA plate location.

VIVO lists a maximum desktop thickness of 3.25 inches. That is only one part of clamp compatibility. A desk can be thinner than the maximum and still have an apron, cable tray, or beveled edge that prevents secure contact. Check the installation manual and the underside before ordering. For a hollow-core desktop, obtain the desk maker's mounting guidance rather than assuming an added plate makes any load safe.

  • Pros: straightforward height setting; two common VESA patterns; a side-mounted pole layout can preserve usable depth.
  • Cons: changing height is less convenient than a floating arm; the pole and folded joints still occupy space; a long reach is not proof of compact retraction.

Skip this if two users need very different monitor heights throughout the day, or the desk offers no suitable off-center mounting position.

When is the Ergotron LX Pro worth choosing?

The Ergotron LX Pro is the stronger candidate when repositioning matters as much as reclaiming desk space. Its counterbalanced adjustment lets you move a compatible monitor through its lift range, while a base rotation stop can limit movement toward a nearby wall or partition.

That stop is a protection feature, not a promise that the screen will sit flush with the wall. The upper section, monitor enclosure, cables, and desired height still create an envelope. If you work on a shallow desk, compare the maker's dimensional drawings with the position you need at both your lowest and highest screen settings. An arm that fits while raised may project farther forward when lowered.

The LX Pro's lower and upper weight limits both matter. Include a mounted webcam or adapter in the total, and use the monitor's weight without its original stand. A monitor below the supported range can be as unsuitable as one above it because the lift mechanism must balance the load. A curved monitor also shifts its center of gravity forward; use Ergotron's compatibility resources for the exact display rather than relying on diagonal size alone.

  • Pros: convenient repositioning; substantial lift range; rotation stop for controlling base sweep.
  • Cons: more adjustment capability than a fixed setup needs; a folded arm still consumes space; compatibility depends on load and monitor geometry.

Skip this if you need a documented flush-to-wall installation and have not confirmed the complete mounted dimensions, or your display falls outside the supported load range.

How do you calculate whether the screen will be too close?

Use the screen face as your reference, not the back of the mount. Measure desk depth, the screen's projection forward from the rear edge, and your normal eye position relative to the front edge. That exposes whether an apparently compact arm actually improves the viewing position you have now.

For example, on a 20-inch-deep desk, a screen face eight inches forward of the rear edge leaves 12 inches between the screen and the front edge. If your eyes are another eight inches beyond the front edge, the viewing distance is about 20 inches. If a different arm layout moves the face three inches rearward, the distance becomes about 23 inches. These are illustrative geometry calculations, not an ergonomic prescription or a measurement of either arm.

Make the same calculation for your existing stand before buying. Sometimes its feet are the problem while the screen position is already good. In that case, an arm that maintains the viewing plane and frees keyboard space is a success. Sometimes the desk itself is too shallow for the display and your seating position; no arm can put the screen behind a solid wall.

What measurements should you send the manufacturer?

Send a side-view sketch with desk depth, desktop thickness, rear gap, underside obstructions, desired screen height, and monitor model. Ask for minimum rear clearance in that specific arrangement. A vague question about whether an arm works on a small desk often produces a vague answer about maximum extension.

Include the mounting method you intend to use. A clamp needs room for its body and installation access. A grommet mount needs an appropriate hole and a suitable supporting surface; an existing cable hole is not automatically a safe mounting point. Do not drill until the desk construction and mount instructions support that installation. If neither method works, a compatible wall mount is a separate project with its own anchoring requirements.

Leave room for plugs. A straight DisplayPort or HDMI connector can extend behind a screen even when the VESA plate is compact. Cables need a relaxed bend and enough slack for movement; pulling them tight to win half an inch can load the sockets. Check portrait rotation too, since the lower corner of the display may hit the desk before the arm reaches its advertised rotation range.

What should you test after installation?

Move the screen slowly through every position you expect to use, with the desk clear and the mount installed as directed. Check the wall, monitor corners, cable tension, and clamp contact. For a sit-stand desk, repeat at both desk heights and confirm that power and display cables do not tighten or snag.

If the arm wobbles, identify whether movement starts at the desktop, clamp, joints, or display before tightening random screws. An arm cannot make a flexible desktop rigid. Our dual-monitor workspace guide covers the broader layout decisions; the WFH hub has related desk and input-device comparisons.

Start here: choose the VIVO for a position you rarely change, or the LX Pro when repeated adjustment is worth paying for, after confirming the actual mounting envelope. Skip this first: any listing promising universal shallow-desk compatibility without a drawing or exact-model fit information. The best arm is the one that puts your particular display in the required position while keeping its entire movement path clear.
