Standing Desk Setup for Dual Monitors or an Ultrawide

Start with the displays you own

Write down each monitor's complete model number, weight without its stand, mounting pattern and any required manufacturer adapter. Include the depth of a curved display, not just its diagonal. Decide whether you need two independent panels, one ultrawide, or an ultrawide plus a secondary screen. The same amount of desktop width can produce very different arrangements when one screen is curved or the secondary panel rotates vertically.

For two displays used equally, sketch both within a comfortable viewing area before choosing an arm. If one screen carries almost all your work, place that screen in the primary position and treat the other as secondary. This is a layout exercise, not a claim that a particular angle prevents injury. FlexiSpot E7: use the exact specification block

The US E7 page lists a dual-motor E7 frame with a 22.8–48.4-inch adjustable height range, a compatible desktop width of 47.2–80 inches and a 355-pound maximum static load. The page also discusses the E7 Pro elsewhere, so do not borrow the Pro's specifications for the E7. Confirm whether a quoted height includes the selected desktop and how the manufacturer defines load for your order.

The practical reason to investigate this frame is its published adjustment range and choice of tops. It is not a guarantee of stability at your standing height. Check the assembled desktop height against both seated typing and standing use. A thick top, keyboard tray or tall caster option changes that calculation; a frame's lowest setting alone cannot answer it.

Heavy ultrawide: match the arm and tilt pivot

Ergotron's monitor-arm catalog distinguishes the HX single-monitor arm from the HX dual arm and the HX with an HD pivot. The standard HX single arm's documented display range is 20–42 pounds. The dual version has a different per-monitor range. A very light panel can be unsuitable for an arm with a minimum load, just as a heavy one can exceed its maximum.

The HX product details also warn that display depth affects capacity. Deep curved monitors can require a different tilt pivot; the catalog identifies an HD configuration for specified deep, heavy displays. Match the complete monitor model with Ergotron's compatibility information rather than interpreting “up to 49 inches” as universal approval. An adapter and a matching bolt pattern do not override a weight or depth restriction.

Two arms versus one dual arm

Two independent arms let you choose separate clamp positions, which may help when one screen is a different size or sits farther away. They also require two suitable mounting areas and more attention to collisions. A dual arm can consolidate the base, but its allowed screen width, per-screen weight and joint geometry may limit how close or far apart the panels can sit.

Before purchase, draw the rear edge, wall and screen positions on paper to scale. Include the space behind the display for connectors and arm joints. Plan the moving cable route

Separate equipment that moves with the desktop from equipment that stays on the floor or a shelf. A dock attached to the top may move with the monitors; a desktop tower on the floor does not. Each cable crossing that boundary needs enough usable length for the intended travel without becoming taut, snagging a joint or hanging in a walkway at the lowest position.

For a planning example, suppose the intended low and high desktop positions differ by 16 inches. That does not mean adding exactly 16 inches to every cable will work: the route around the frame, attachment points, connector orientation and bend allowances also matter. Rehearse the route with a loose length of cord while equipment is unpowered, then choose suitable cables and secure them according to the equipment instructions.

For mains power, follow the desk and power-device instructions. ESFI advises against treating extension cords as permanent wiring. Do not solve an awkward outlet location by improvising a permanent chain of extensions. Keep liquids away from electrical connections and arrange the workspace around an appropriate power supply.

Validate the display workflow before mounting everything

Connect the computer, dock and both screens on their original stands first. Check the resolutions and refresh rates you actually need, independent extended desktops, sleep and wake behavior, charging and the applications used for work. A stand or arm cannot fix a computer's native external-display limit or a dock's software requirements.

Keep the tested cable arrangement documented so installation does not quietly substitute an unsuitable cable or port.

Install in stages, then assess normal use

Assemble the desk according to its exact manual and confirm the tabletop permits the chosen mount. Check screw lengths and underside obstructions before attaching accessories. Follow the arm's loading and tension instructions, including any requirement for a second person. Move the desk only after clearing surrounding furniture, shelves, children, pets and loose objects from its travel area.

Test the intended seated and standing positions with the equipment installed, watching cable slack and surrounding clearance. Evaluate normal typing and screen repositioning before deciding whether more accessories are useful. A mat, drawer or tray is optional and must not obstruct chair movement or the desk's travel. This setup does not require buying every item in a bundle.
