Choose the Hamilton Beach FrontFill 46310J when you need a full-size drip brewer that can be filled from the front beneath a cabinet. Choose the Zojirushi ZUTTO EC-DAC50 when a much shorter body and a smaller batch matter more, provided you can remove and refill its tank without obstruction. A coffee maker's closed height is only the first fit check; loading, cleaning, carafe removal, and steam all need room too.
Measure the lowest cabinet lip
Rehearse filling and filter access

This is a cabinet-access comparison, not a general best-cheap-coffee-maker roundup. The existing coffee makers under $100 guide addresses a budget-led question, while our small-kitchen coffee station guide covers the whole counter. Here the useful decision is whether a brewer works in the space throughout the entire morning routine.

Why is the FrontFill the practical under-cabinet choice?
The Hamilton Beach FrontFill 46310J directly addresses the awkward task of pouring water into the back of a brewer under a cabinet. Its front water access and swing-open basket reduce the need to drag the machine forward merely to load water and grounds.
That matters in a shared kitchen where the machine has a permanent place between other appliances. Repeatedly sliding a brewer can pull its cord, disturb items beside it, or make filling a full reservoir clumsy. Front access changes the direction of the task. It does not eliminate the need for room in front of the counter or enough clearance for your hand and pouring vessel.
Check the exact model suffix. Hamilton Beach lists the older 46310 as no longer available on its own page, while the current 46310J has a separate listing. Similar names and photographs make it easy to apply one version's specifications to another. Use the model number on the seller listing and the supplied manual when judging fit, features, and replacement parts.
- Pros: front water loading; a swing-open basket; a larger batch format for households that share a pot.
- Cons: taller closed body than the ZUTTO; basket swing needs unobstructed room; front-fill convenience does not establish steam-safe placement in every cabinet recess.
Skip this if the cabinet lip is at or below the brewer's closed height, or nearby objects prevent the basket from opening and being removed for cleaning.
When does the short ZUTTO make more sense?
The Zojirushi ZUTTO EC-DAC50 is the better starting candidate for one or two modest servings when the closed body must be short. Its removable tank lets you carry water to the brewer in a dedicated container, but you still need a clear path to lift and replace it.
The five-cup label needs translating into your cups. Zojirushi lists a maximum of 24 ounces or 680mL, so this is not a machine for five large American mugs. Compare the batch with your actual morning consumption before trading away capacity to gain height. A short brewer that forces repeated batches can be less convenient than a larger front-fill machine that fits properly.
The filter arrangement also changes cleanup. Follow the instructions for placing the cone basket and paper filter, and allow room to handle the carafe assembly without knocking it against the cabinet or nearby dishes. The product's compact depth on a specification sheet does not include the space occupied by your hand as you pull out the carafe or carry the tank past it.
- Pros: short closed profile; removable water tank; a small-batch format that suits limited counter space.
- Cons: limited serving volume; tank removal still needs access; compact outside dimensions do not equal a fully documented operating envelope.
Skip this if you need a pot for several large mugs or cannot comfortably remove the tank in the intended location.
How do you measure the real operating space?
Measure from the counter to the lowest obstruction above the proposed position, including a cabinet trim strip or under-cabinet light. Then map the space needed to fill water, load grounds, remove the carafe, and lift out washable parts. Record these as separate tasks rather than one vague clearance number.
For example, a measured 15-inch opening leaves 1.1 inches above a 13.9-inch closed body, or 4.375 inches above a 10.625-inch body. Those are arithmetic differences, not certified operating clearances. A lid, removable tank, hand, or measuring jug may need more room than the remainder. The shorter machine can still be harder to refill if the tank has to lift through that gap.
Ask for a dimensional drawing or confirmation of the fully open configuration when the fit is close. Neither cited product page provides a complete measured lid-open and tank-removal envelope, so we do not invent one. A retailer return policy may help manage an uncertain fit, but it should not replace checking a clearly inadequate space before ordering.
Does front filling mean you can brew in any recess?
No. Loading access and operating placement are separate questions. Front filling can remove the need to pour into a rear opening, but it does not guarantee that heat and moisture are suitable beneath every cabinet finish or inside an enclosed appliance garage. Follow the exact brewer's placement instructions.
Look at where the machine vents and where steam travels during normal operation. Do not close doors around a running appliance merely because its body fits inside. If the manufacturer's instructions require a different position, plan the counter around those instructions. An easily loaded machine is not worth a cramped setup that makes cleaning, cooling, or access to the outlet difficult.
If you use a sliding appliance tray, account for its height in the original measurement and check that it supports the brewer securely. Moving a hot, full coffee maker is different from sliding an empty appliance before setup. Keep the cord clear and move equipment only as its instructions allow. A tray adds another object to measure; it does not create free vertical space.
Which daily tasks are easy to overlook?
Check whether you can see the water markings from your normal position and whether the carafe clears the cabinet's front edge. A machine can be easy to fill while empty yet awkward when you are holding a heavy jug. Rehearse the movement with an empty container before committing to a permanent location.
Also plan for used grounds. If the basket must be lifted and carried sideways to reach the bin, leave that path clear. Keep replacement filters and the scoop nearby without stacking them on the brewer. A compact station works when each task has a place, not when every accessory disappears into the last inch of overhead space.
Start here: FrontFill 46310J for front loading and a shared pot; ZUTTO for a short body and a genuinely small batch. Skip this first: buying from closed height alone, assuming a removable reservoir needs no overhead room, or reading “five cups” as five large mugs. If you grind fresh, our brew-grinder workflow guide explains batch handling; the coffee hub connects the rest of the equipment.
Sources and unmeasured clearances
Checked September 27, 2026: Hamilton Beach 46310J specifications, Zojirushi EC-DAC50 specifications, and ZUTTO manual. We did not measure lid-open height, steam paths, or tank-removal clearance on physical units. Exact operating fit remains conditional on your space and the supplied manual.
