Choose the Acaia Lunar 2021 when vertical clearance is your main constraint and its 105mm-square footprint fits the tray. Consider the Wacaco Exagram Pro when you need a smaller footprint and can accept a taller scale. The Lunar's approximately 15–15.5mm height can preserve cup clearance; the Exagram Pro's 90 × 95mm footprint can fit a narrower space, but its listed 22mm height consumes more of the gap below the portafilter.

01

Measure tray support

02

Subtract scale and cup height

03

Keep controls and discharge clear

Those are different problems, and buying the smallest-looking scale does not solve both. Measure with the portafilter locked in and the cup you actually use. This guide focuses on physical fit and operating workflow rather than repeating our Lunar versus Black Mirror Nano comparison. We have not tested response speed, long-term waterproofing, or fit on every machine.

When is the Lunar the better low-profile choice?

The Acaia Lunar 2021 is the stronger candidate when your cup nearly reaches the portafilter spouts. Its low body leaves more vertical room than the Exagram Pro, provided the larger square base is properly supported and the cup does not cover the controls you need.

Budget for the actual assembled height. Acaia's current product page lists a 15mm body while its Lunar 2021 support specifications state 15.5mm. Those sources do not explain the difference, so do not assume it is only rounding or that every revision is identical. Use the more conservative value when planning, confirm the exact version if the fit is close, and include any pad you intend to use. A gap that works only if every dimension is rounded in your favor is not a comfortable daily setup.

The Lunar's compactness is most valuable when it lets you weigh the beverage during extraction without switching cups or removing the normal drip tray. If you simply weigh beans on a dry counter and time a shot separately, you may not need this class of espresso scale. Buy for the job under the group head, not because an expensive scale looks proportional to an expensive machine.

  • Pros: low body profile; square platform for compact espresso cups; manufacturer fit resources for checking machine combinations.
  • Cons: a wider base than the Exagram Pro; little benefit if tray height is not your problem; cup and pad choices still determine practical clearance.

Skip this if your tray cannot support the scale's feet, or the cup you need already exceeds the remaining height after accounting for the scale and pad.

Why consider the narrower Exagram Pro?

The Wacaco Exagram Pro is worth considering when the usable tray area is tight but your cup is short. Its smaller rectangular body gives you another layout to try. That can matter around curved tray edges or obstructions where a wider square scale does not sit securely.

Use a paper rectangle to compare orientations. Rotating a 90 × 95mm footprint may help it clear an obstruction, but it may also put the display or touch controls in an awkward position. A scale that fits only sideways behind a cup can make stopping at a target beverage weight harder. Include the hand movement required to tare and start a timer when deciding whether the arrangement works.

Do not confuse Exagram Pro with the original Exagram. A shared brand and similar name do not establish identical dimensions, power options, or operating modes. Match the model to Wacaco's current product page and manual, then inspect the seller's photographs. Its supplied accessories also need storage; a compact scale can still become an awkward purchase if the kitchen has no dry place for it between uses.

  • Pros: a smaller footprint; a rectangular shape that offers another fitting orientation; useful when width rather than height is the main restriction.
  • Cons: taller than the Lunar; less platform area around a cup; controls can become hard to reach in a tight recess.

Skip this if you already have almost no headroom above a tall cup, or the only workable orientation hides the display.

How do you calculate the cup clearance?

Subtract the scale's installed height and cup height from the distance between the tray support surface and the lowest part of the locked portafilter. Include the heat pad if used. Leave room to insert and remove the cup without scraping the spouts or tilting a full drink.

For a worked example, suppose your measured gap is 110mm and the cup is 80mm tall. A 15.5mm scale leaves 14.5mm before allowing for a pad; a 22mm scale leaves 8mm. That is a calculated example, not a published clearance for a Bambino, Gaggia, or another machine. It shows why two scales both described as compact can feel very different during use.

Measure again if you change portafilters. A bottomless portafilter, a single spout, and a double spout can leave different space below the basket. Do not buy a new portafilter solely to rescue a poorly fitting scale without considering compatibility and your preferred workflow. A shorter cup can be a simpler solution if it still holds the beverage you intend to weigh.

What should Bambino and Gaggia owners check specifically?

For a Bambino or Bambino Plus, check the scale against the actual tray, locked portafilter, and intended cup; do not transfer a fit claim between the two machine names without measuring. For a Gaggia Classic-family machine, include the drip-tray version and any modifications when comparing fit photographs or manufacturer compatibility notes.

Acaia maintains a machine-fit resource, but a photograph or listed machine does not establish the clearance of your cup-and-portafilter combination. Use it as a starting point, then make your own paper footprint and height mockup with the machine switched off. Keep temporary mockup materials away from heat and water, and remove them before brewing. The point is to reject an obvious mismatch before an order, not to simulate brewing.

If your machine has a discharge path near the scale, make sure the placement does not block it. Do not treat a water-resistant product claim as permission to immerse the scale or leave it standing in overflow. Follow the maker's cleaning and charging instructions and keep the charging connection dry. A well-fitting scale still needs a sensible location when you purge or clean the machine.

Which operating details matter after the size check?

A readable display, predictable tare behavior, and a timer mode you understand matter more than an unused list of automatic modes. Start with manual weighing and timing so you know what the scale is doing. Introduce automatic features only after confirming what triggers them and whether that matches your machine's pre-infusion routine.

Check that the cup touches only the weighing platform. A handle resting on the machine, a cup against the rear wall, or a scale body wedged into the tray can interfere with a reading. Support the feet as intended and leave clearance around the moving weighing surface. If the number behaves oddly, correct those contacts before concluding the electronics are faulty.

Start here: Lunar for a tight vertical gap, Exagram Pro for a tight footprint with enough height left for your cup. Skip this first: choosing from body height alone or assuming a universal “fits Bambino” listing covers every basket and cup. Pair the scale with a repeatable dose using our Bambino grinder guide, and see the coffee hub for related comparisons.
