For glasses, choose a light you can move above and to the side of the camera before paying for extra brightness. The Elgato Key Light Air MK.2 is the stronger candidate for a fixed desk where its clamp mount gives you positioning freedom. The smaller Key Light Neo suits a portable, monitor-mounted setup, but its position near the webcam can make reflections harder to move out of your lenses. Neither light can guarantee reflection-free glasses.

This guide focuses on light placement and everyday calls, rather than studio lighting or a general webcam upgrade. If your screen also needs repositioning, our shallow-desk monitor-arm guide helps plan the space around the camera. Finish that layout before deciding where a lamp can clamp or which cables will reach.

| Decision | Key Light Neo | Key Light Air MK.2 |
|---|---|---|
| Default placement | Monitor or laptop mount | Desk clamp mount; check bundle |
| Panel width × height × depth | 150 × 150 × 38mm | 319 × 207 × 33mm |
| Maximum rated output | Up to 1,000 lumens; power dependent | Up to 2,100 lumens; power dependent |
| Best buying reason here | Compact call kit with physical controls | More freedom to position a larger panel |
| Main glasses tradeoff | Screen mounting can keep the reflection near your eyes | Needs a usable clamp location and room above the desk |
Why start with the Key Light Air MK.2 for a fixed desk?
The Elgato Key Light Air MK.2 earns its place through mounting flexibility. A light attached independently to the desk can move away from the webcam axis while the camera remains where you want to look. That separation is useful when a bright rectangle sits directly over your eyes in the call preview.
Check that the listing is specifically MK.2. The older Key Light Air uses a different design, so a review showing its base, power arrangement, or output is not evidence for this model. Also distinguish the mount bundle from any light-only offer. A panel without a suitable support does not solve a placement problem, regardless of its brightness specification.
The current mount is listed at 60–88cm high. Compare that range with your seated eye level and monitor top, then consider where the panel itself will sit when angled. The published range is a hardware measurement, not a promise that the light will clear a shelf or avoid your glasses. Measure the space at the actual clamp position, including any wall or shelving behind it.
- Pros: independent desk mounting; a larger panel; onboard adjustments that avoid making software a prerequisite for a simple call.
- Cons: more equipment around the monitor; power-source-dependent brightness; clamp and panel clearance must be checked separately.
Skip this if your desk edge cannot accept the mount, you frequently move rooms, or the panel would have to remain directly beside the camera because there is nowhere else to put it.
When is the smaller Key Light Neo enough?
The Elgato Key Light Neo makes more sense when portability and quick setup are the priority. Its screen mount avoids a separate desk footprint, and physical controls let you change the light while looking at the preview. That is a practical advantage for a laptop used at different desks throughout the week.
The drawback is directly connected to that convenience. A light perched near the webcam may be difficult to move far enough sideways or upward to shift its reflection out of both lenses. Before buying, try a movable existing lamp in approximately the same position and observe where the bright patch appears. This will not reproduce Neo's light quality, but it can reveal whether that location is fundamentally awkward for your glasses and camera angle.
Buy it for a compact workflow when the available mounting angle works, rather than assuming a smaller panel produces a smaller visible problem. Your distance, head position, lens curvature, screen angle, and other room lights all influence what appears on camera. A portable light is useful only if you can repeat an acceptable position without balancing the laptop at an uncomfortable angle.
- Pros: small panel; no separate desk stand required for its intended screen mounting; convenient local controls.
- Cons: limited separation from the camera in its default setup; monitor angle affects positioning; maximum output depends on the power source.
Skip this if a light above your screen already creates persistent reflections and you have no practical way to change that geometry.
How should you position the first light?
Start with one light, modest brightness, and the camera at the position you will actually use. Move the light to one side and above eye level, pointing toward your face. An angle around 45 degrees is a starting experiment, not a required setting. Watch both lenses while moving the light in small increments; the useful location is the one that works on your camera with your glasses.
Turn your head naturally as though reading a second screen or speaking to another participant. A setup that looks clear only when you freeze in one exact pose will be frustrating during real calls. If reflections return during ordinary movement, try a different height or side position before increasing the brightness or buying a second lamp.
Diffusion can soften shadows, but it does not make a reflective lens stop reflecting a bright source. A ring light can appear as a ring and a panel can appear as a rectangle. Shape alone is therefore a weak buying criterion for glasses. The ability to place and dim the source is more useful than a promise that one lighting category is universally glare-free.
What if the reflection is coming from something else?
Switch off the new light temporarily and inspect the preview again. If the patch remains, isolate the monitor, window, ceiling fixture, and desk lamp one at a time. A bright document on the screen can contribute its own reflection. Changing the new panel's settings cannot remove light coming from another source.
Keep the screen readable while testing a lower display brightness or a different window position. Try a blind or curtain when daylight changes substantially through the day. Avoid making the room so dark that the monitor becomes the dominant bright object facing your glasses. Save a practical daytime arrangement and a separate evening arrangement instead of trying to force one setting to cover both conditions.
What power and desk details matter before ordering?
Do not equate a USB-C connector with full brightness. Elgato lists approximately 400 lumens for Air MK.2 at the 7.5W power tier and approximately 2,100 at 27W or more; its system guidance specifies a 30W-or-higher compatible supply for full output. The listed standard box contains a cable and mount, so check whether your particular bundle includes the power adapter you expect.
You may not need maximum output for a close video call, but you should know what your chosen power source supplies. A laptop port, dock, or multiport charger may behave differently when other devices are attached. Our dual-monitor dock guide explains why charging and display capabilities need separate checks; reserve an appropriate power path for the light as well.
Finally, allow the cable to follow the full light adjustment without tugging on a laptop or pulling across the keyboard. Keep clamp hardware clear of the monitor arm and confirm that neither mount obstructs the other. Two individually compatible accessories can still compete for the same small section of desk edge.
Start here: Air MK.2 when independent positioning is the missing ingredient; Neo when a compact screen-mounted arrangement already passes your reflection experiment. Skip this first: shopping by lumens alone or expecting diffusion to erase every reflection. Use the WFH equipment hub to coordinate the rest of the desk.
